Call 911 for any life-threatening emergency
Symptoms
- Shakiness, trembling, or dizziness
- Confusion or difficulty speaking
- Sweating, pale skin, or rapid heartbeat
- Loss of consciousness or seizure
What to Do
- If conscious, give 15g of fast-acting sugar (juice box, glucose tabs, or regular soda)
- Wait 15 minutes, then recheck blood sugar
- If still below 70 mg/dL, repeat the treatment
- Once stable, provide a snack with protein and complex carbs
- Do not leave the member unattended until fully recovered
When to Call 911
- Member is unconscious or having a seizure
- Member cannot swallow safely
- Blood sugar does not rise after two treatments
- Glucagon is administered (always call 911 after glucagon)
Symptoms
- Excessive thirst and frequent urination
- Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
- Fruity-smelling breath
- Rapid or labored breathing
- Fatigue, drowsiness, or confusion
What to Do
- Check blood sugar and ketones if possible
- Encourage the member to drink water
- Administer correction insulin per the member's care plan
- Allow unrestricted bathroom access
- Contact the parent/guardian immediately
- Monitor closely; do not allow physical activity
When to Call 911
- Blood sugar above 400 mg/dL with moderate/large ketones
- Member is vomiting repeatedly and cannot keep fluids down
- Difficulty breathing or rapid, deep breaths
- Altered consciousness, confusion, or unresponsiveness
Step-by-Step Guide
- Confirm the member is unconscious or unable to swallow safely
- Locate the member's glucagon kit (check their emergency supplies)
- For injectable glucagon: mix the powder and liquid as directed on the kit, inject into the thigh or upper arm
- For nasal glucagon (Baqsimi): insert tip into one nostril and press plunger firmly
- Turn the member on their side to prevent choking
- Call 911 immediately after administering glucagon
- Member should regain consciousness within 10-15 minutes
- Once awake and able to swallow, offer a sugary drink, then a snack
- Notify the parent/guardian and document the event
